After a week and three storms, here on the Northwest side of the U.S. I decided that photographing black would probably give me the least amount of trouble, since I depend on natural light and it's been unpredictable lately.
Dolly Wink is the brain child of Tsubasa Masuwaka, a Japanese model known for her Gyaru style. The Dolly Wink liquid liner has had some buzz in the beauty community, especially for those that have an interest in Asian beauty products. If you're familiar with the Dolly Wink eyeliner you're probably noticing that mine is has different packaging.
With the attention growing for the liquid eyeliner in particular, I went shopping around for it in San Francisco. There's not a lot I can't find in this city. So eventually, I ended up at Sune, yes that beauty store again, and learned that the Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner was not FDA approved which explained why I couldn't find it anywhere. So fast foward about a year and half and I find this little gem at my local Asian pop culture mini mart hangout, Genki.
Sold for $19.99, the Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner has been relaunched it seems and it also comes in a brown shade that has brown and turquoise packaging. The black shade kept the pink packaging except that the pink is now cooler toned and instead of black polka dots, you have lavender flowers as a pattern. This liner also comes with a fine point brush tip that allows for lots of precision, although do be careful with it because it can be a bit inky.
The eyeliner itself is incredibly smudge proof. Once it sets, vigorous attempts to mess with it will be met with failure. That result is rather amazing considering the eyeliner doesn't claim to be waterproof. I have found it to be very water resistant though, so unless your eyes somehow get doused in warm water, I wouldn't worry about it budging. Now if you're going to draw a thick line, the product will have a noticeable sheen once it dries, so you might want to top it off with some black eye shadow or gel eyeliner.
Lastly, if you have fine lines, I highly suggest priming your lids before attempting to use the eyeliner. As you can see in the photo above, I've got some minor feathering going on but I have had swatches where the feathering is really far reaching. I also had it happen on one of my lids the first time I tried it, but since then I really trying to make sure my eyes are properly primed first.
Overall, I'm really pleased with the performance of the Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner. I love that it's so smudge and budge proof, but isn't a pain to remove. Just some warm water and make up removing cleanser does the job fine. I also love how precise I can be with it also, those points on the wings aren't a problem when I use this liner. For $20, I would say it was money well spent here.
